Q&A with Ms. Kendra Hornschemeier, math teacher

By Jimmy Chau
Ms. Kendra Hornschemeier, math teacher, teaches algebra II. She is an alumnus of three local schools: McNicholas High School, Ohio University, and Xavier University. Prior to arriving at SHS, she taught at McNicholas.

1. Where did you attend college?

I attended Ohio University for my Bachelor of Business Administration, then Xavier University for my Master of Secondary Education.

2. Why did you choose teaching?

I chose teaching because I wanted to use my abilities to help young adults succeed in and out of the classroom.

3. Who or what inspired you to be a teacher?

Interacting with children through child care and coaching inspired me to become a teacher. I found that working with young adults is very challenging, yet rewarding. My older sister Kara also inspired me. She teaches 4th grade at Mercer. Seeing her change the lives of her students and be so good at what she does made me want to do the same.

4. When did you know you wanted to be a teacher?

I always thought about becoming a teacher. I decided to make the change from an accountant four years ago when I started coaching the women's soccer team at McNicholas High School.

5. Were you teaching prior to Sycamore High School? If so, where and for how long?

I taught for 1 year at McNicholas High School.

6. What do you like about the high school so far?

I really enjoy building relationships with the students at Sycamore and hearing about their extra curricular activities. The staff is awesome! Everyone has been so helpful during my first year.

7. What are your hobbies/what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

My favorite thing to do is spend time with my nephews (I have 3) and my niece. They are the best! I also love playing sports. I play indoor soccer with my high school teammates and it's fun trying to tear it up like old times.

8. What is one thing that makes you different from the other teachers at the high school?

I have way less experience!
